This issue is something that allot of Sikhs hold very close to their hearts.
As we all know that in 1984 the Indian Army (aka the indian dogs) ordered by indira gandhi (aka the indian witch) attacked our most sacred shrine Shri Harminder Sahib. Prior to this event, one particular event probably set it all off. This event was the 1978 massacre of innocent Sikh protestors by indian state sponsered terrorists (nirankari's under the command of gurbachana). After this it was never the same.
Many people believe that the movement was primarily just for establishing a separate Sikh state (Khalistan) but it wasn't. The main focuses of the movement were to get the indian government to give Sikhs equal rights and treatment as everyone else in India. Sikhs were basically relegated as second class citizens by the government. This was totally unacceptable due to the fact that most sacrifices made during the British Raj in order to get independence were made by Sikhs. Sikhs representing only 2% of the population of India were the major players in establishing independence from Britain. Sikhs were always the strongest and bravest, stood out among all others. Sikhs were the most vocal against the British and they did everything to make India. After all that do you think it is fair to be relegated as second class citizens? I think not.
Sant Baba Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale rose against this and brought attention to this. Sant Ji brought the Guru's word to thousands and thousands of Sikhs. He had youth turn away from reading erotic literature and got them to read Gurbani and take amrit. Sant Ji gave amrit to thousands and thousands of Sikhs and brought them to the path of Vaheguru. Just like Baba Deep Singh Ji, Sant Ji helped defend the honour of Shri Harminder Sahib. Sant Ji never left the complex during the 1984 attack because he had done ardas before that he would stay and fight until he attained Shaheedi. Such is the bravery of a true GurSikh, fighting with a few hundred Singh's against a army of 100,000 troops. The Sikhs inside the Harminder Sahib complex fought with such courage and bravery that chills were sent down the spines of the indian army commanders.
Among the Singh's that were Shaheed in 1978 was Bhai Fauja Singh Ji. Bhai Sahib had a friend named Sukhdev Singh.
The massacre was felt very dearly by Bhai Sukhdev Singh and this is what triggered him to establish the Babbar Khalsa. Bhai Sahib was a lion. His charisma, his bravery, his personality, his spirituality, and his discipline were of no match. Bhai Sahib was actually present during the attack and fought in it. He only left because five Singhs gave him the order to leave but had insisted that he stay and provide cover fire so the other Singhs could leave. After the attack Bhai Sahib helped run the movement and was responsible for bring justice to hundreds of indian polictians, police officers, army officials etc. Even before the attack he brought justice to anyone who made the Sikhs suffer. He was a key organizer of the nirankari gurbachana assassination. Bhai Sahib became the main focus of the punjab police and indian intelligence agencies. As the police came to get him Bhai Sahib said "The Sukhdev Singh you have come to get has left, this body is an empty vessel, you may do with this as you wish." Bhai Sahib attained Shaheedi on 9th August 1992.
Among these two great GurSikhs there are many Sikhs who became Shaheed as a result of fighting for freedom. All we can do is remember these GurSikhs and be inspired by them.
These Sikhs were lions of the panth, they fought until they attained Shaheedi. To them death was nothing, they neither feared it or dreaded it, they welcomed it. Lest we forget.
I give my full respect to my Shaheed brothers and sisters. While we wait for round 2 all we can hope for is that we too are blessed by Vaheguru with the chance to fight for faith and go the same route as these GurSikhs went. Faith is priority one and everything is else number 2.
"True Lord, may my body be a sacrifice unto your feet. Guru, father, may I not show my back in the field of battle, and may I be martyred battling the enemies of the faith. Guru, Father, have mercy on me, may the enemy's bullets not hit my back, may I take them upon my chest. satguru, do not think of my faults, please let me embrace your feet."
